Animals & Apples

Wake up and have breakfast before shuffling off to Southwick’s Zoo, home to hundreds of animals representing a wide variety of species, some of which are endangered. Spend an hour or all day.

Other options:

A visit to this region is not complete without a stop at the stately Asa Waters Mansion in Millbury, rumored to be a stop on the Underground Railroad. If you're into folk art and Christmas collectibles, a visit to the Vaillancourt Folk Art Shop and factory tour is a must! One of only three American factories that still craft Christmas plaster ware from antique candy moulds. The perfect stop during December's Chain of Lights celebration.

If you find yourself intrigued by natural beauty then Purgatory Chasm warrants a visit. Hiking trails wind through this gorgeous 1,300 hundred acre park, culminating with dramatic 70 foot deep, glacier formed rock gorges, just begging to be tackled by the experienced climber or explored by curious kids. If you are in the mood for shopping there are unique collectables or souvenirs at the Grafton Country Store or try the many Shoppes at Blackstone Valley

Day 3

Head to Keown Orchards in Sutton! The orchards feature over 50 varieties of pick-your-own apples, over 10 varieties of peaches, pears, plums, cherries, strawberries and a full line of vegetables. Have yourself a hayride and take home a pumpkin of your choice. And for the green thumbs in your group, the orchard also offers educational classes in herbs and landscaping. After picking your apples consider traveling back in time to Old Sturbridge Village. Come socialize with the village people! Stroll around our 200-acre Village and meet working farmers and craftsmen. Visit for a while with housewives and shopkeepers. Lend a hand with kitchen chores at the Fitch House hearth. If you’ve never before milked a cow, then this your big chance. Help a tinner snip metal to make a cup or lantern or learn how to peg a shoe. At your leisure, sample hearty fare at the Bullard Tavern. Browse the shops at Old Sturbridge Village for crafts and gifts, fine jewelry and classic books.
