Charter Summer Concert Series: Classics to Broadway
The Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra continues its 62nd consecutive season of free outdoor summer concerts in Worcester's Institute Park on Saturday, July 21, at 7:00 PM. Entitled "Classics to Broadway," this concert is part of the Charter Summer Concert Series. This performance will feature classics of the symphonic repertoire, favorite pops selections, and highlights from popular Broadway
musicals. Maestro Myron Romanul will conduct and soloists with the orchestra will be tenor Michael Calmès and soprano Jane Shivick.
Included will be Handel's Music from the Royal Fireworks, Rakoczy March by Berlioz, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 (Fourth Movement),
operatic selections by Verdi and De Curtis, highlights from "Porgy and Bess" and "Wicked," and music of Anderson, Estefan, Seger, and
Sousa, among others.
Conductor Myron Romanul was the original pianist of the New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble, with whom he is featured on the Grammy Award-Winning Angel-EMI recording Scott Joplin: The Red Back Book. He is currently First Kapellmeister of the State Theatre in Munich, Germany and for years was touring pianist with Arthur Fiedler and the
Boston Pops Orchestra.
A protege of Daniel Pinkham, Tenor Michael Calmès is an internationally acclaimed singer who has performed with the Boston Lyric Opera Company and Boston's Handel and Haydn Society. Soprano Jane Shivick has been hailed by The New York Times for her "character and vocal richness." She has appeared as a soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra under Conductor Keith Lockhart, the Boston Civic Symphony, and the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, among others.
After this concert, the Symphony concludes its summer series with a Pops Concert inaugurating the Riley-Pappas Performance Pavilion at
the Dr. Arthur and Dr. Martha Pappas Recreation Complex off Pakachoag Street in Auburn on Friday, July 27, 2012 (rain dates: July 28 and
