Museum of Russian Icons: November News and Events

Archangel Michael

Imaging the Invisible Exhibition

On View now through February 2, 2013

The great masters of iconography developed the use of symbolism to depict otherworldly beings and imprecise subjects such as angels, demons, prayer, and wisdom. Over time, these developed into beautiful and sometimes, mysterious images.

The exhibition Imaging the Invisible: Angels, Demons, Prayer and Wisdom incorporates 60 icons and artifacts from the Museum of Russian Icons collection depicting uncanny, ethereal subjects and concepts. This exhibition includes a mix of new acquisitions and previously unseen icons.

This unique and creative exhibition is curated by Museum of Russian Icons Registrar, Laura Garrity-Arquitt.

Romanian icons on glass offer the strange image of a folk art, clearly outlined and unique in its technical quality and sensitivity and derived from traditions hundreds of years old. The talk places the icons in the cultural environment of Central and Eastern Europe making comparative notes and historic connections. Less known information about how the peasant iconographers prepared their own materials and the technical skills they mastered in creating these icons is presented together with many examples of icons on glass from different geographical areas of today’s Romania.
