Winter Babies to be Featured at Southwick’s Zoo, Starting April 13th

Winter Babies to be Featured at Southwick’s Zoo

Mendon, MA- April 13 is almost here, and with it, opening day at Southwick’s Zoo. The 2013 zoo season will be featuring some of the new animal babies who were born over the winter.  New Southwick’s Zoo family members include  Ring-tailed Lemur twins, a Schmidt’s Guenon, several kangaroo joeys, and twin marmosets.  Of course, there are more on the way!

Perhaps the biggest addition (pun intended) was the addition of 2 African Lion cubs born at the zoo October 2012. The sibling pair made appearances back in December at the open house of the Purple Peacock Gift Shop. They have grown by leaps and bounds since then. Now 6-months old, the cubs are the most asked about animals on the Southwick’s Zoo Facebook page.

“Opening Day always brings with it a lot of excitement,” says Justine Brewer, President of Southwick’s Zoo. “Visitors very much look forward to seeing new baby animals.  In this case, at 6-months old, the cubs are already a legacy. The proud papa has been a zoo favorite for over 20 years, and he now has offspring to carry on his name.”

The Brewer family, who owns and operates New England’s largest zoo, is busy readying the venue’s 200 acre adventure park for visitors to view. Included with these responsibilities are preparations for the Skyfari Sky Ride, where visitors are able to see the zoo from new heights.
The 2013 Southwick’s Zoo season runs from April 13 to October 27 and is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition to over 500 exotic animals to see and learn about, Southwick’s Zoo offers a petting zoo, daily live animal presentations at the Earth Discovery Center, and a daily interactive show called Bird Talk.
